Human Rights Center Issues Statement Regarding Siprashvili Family

March 7, 2011
Human Rights Center issues statement regarding Siprashvili family living in the village of Anaga in the Sighnaghi Region. Human Rights Center protests the ways the Social Service Agency treated the small children of Siprashvilis.

“The Police and an ambulance brigade was mobilized near the Siprashvili’s house in the village of Abagas. The officials of Social Service Agency threatened a mother of seven children with seizing her children. The children witnessed this fact and started crying as they did not want to leave their mother. Though Seprashvilis live in severe conditions, deprivation of parental right and transferring children to orphanage should not be the only aim of the social service agency and it should be used in case of urgent necessity. The Agency had been aware of severe social-economical situation of this family for many years. However according to the explanations obtained by our representatives the social workers had never worked with the parents for improving the conditions. Opressing a family by police power and threatening them in the presence of children violates human rights and is absolutely unacceptable,” – states Human Rights Center.

Human Rights Center Kakheti Office lawyers observed the events occurred on March 4th near Siprashvilis house. There was noise in the village Anaga that day. The mother categorically refused to allow transfer of her children to the orphanage. As a result the officials of the Sighnaghi Department of Social Service Agency and Kakheti Coordinating Center could not seize the children.

After journalists and Human Rights Center representatives arrived on the spot, Agency officials refused that they were planning to seize children by police force. The fact it that the police had been mobilized at Siprashvili’s house for several hours.

Later, Maia Siprashvili was transferred to Tsnori hospital by ambulance. According to the doctors, the mother and children have a severe virus infection.

Human Rights Center continues monitoring.
