I have Nothing Left but My name – States IDP, Head of Large Family

March 14, 2011
Sopo Getsadze

An IDP family has addressed the Human Rights Center for help. Malkhaz Shoshitashvili has been living in the house of his brother in the village Chumateleti of Khashuri municipality for three years now.

The Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation had offered Shoshitashvili six-member family an accommodation in the cottage. However, the family had refused to move to the cottage.

“They were giving us just one cottage – saying that the family is considered large if it has more than seven members. We did not move to this cottage as it is intended for three people. Maximum four people can fit in it. We would have no way fit in that cottage. Since I had no other choice, I agreed on the compensation due to the severe illness of my wife.”

Malkhaz Shoshitashvili’s wife got poisoned in Chumateleti by the well water. She got erosion and ulcers as a result. After three surgeries, doctors found that computed tomography examination was needed.

“Seven months ago doctors found that computed tomography was needed. But we could not pay for it. When she is in pain, we call the ambulance and they give pain- killers. But can pain-killers heal a person?! I no longer have pain killers and I am even embarrassed to call the ambulance,” – notes Malkhaz Shoshitashvili.

Considering the family situation, the compensation was spent on the medical treatment of Malkhaz Shoshitashvili’s wife and winter expenses. The Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation additionally offered a cottage in the village Sakasheti. However, after the cottage was built, the family was taken out of the list due to uncertain reasons.

“There was time when I had my house, garden, agriculture and money. I have nothing now, nothing but my name,” – states Shoshitashvili. He numerous times addressed the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation with the request of employment. He addressed the President’s administration with the same request twice. The Ministry sent a letter that they cannot grant his request.

Currently, Shoshitashvili family is receiving IDP financial assistance – 28 GEL per person. Plus, with the war veteran document operating since 1989, they are receiving 22 GEL for electricity. Shoshitashvili family also had a status of socially vulnerable. But since they received 20 GEL less money in sum, they rejected this status and are using only IDP status now.
