Human Rights Center Request Urgent Reaction

March 17, 2011

Human Rights Center accuses Kakheti Coordinating Center of Social Service Agency in the indifference. According to the organization, in the village Lapniani of Lagodekhi region, seven children of Makievi family are living under intolerable conditions. According to Makievis neighbors, the children often do not have any bread and they eat grass.

Father and two little children of Makievi family are with limited capabilities. Their house is damaged. There is insanitation in the rooms. Despite the poverty, the Lagodekhi Department of Social Service Agency has terminated the social assistance program for Makievi family in June of the past year, and as a result, a family of seven children has been left without help. The neighbors give bread to children. Kakheti Information Center had prepared photo reportage on Makievi family first on December 24, 2010.

After the photo reportage was published, the social agency checked the family again and as the Kakheti Information Center was informed by the social agency, the social assistance was fixed to Makievis several days ago.

This time, Human Rights Center is asking for the transfer of Makievi children to the orphanage.

“Human Rights Center lawyers studied the social-economic state and living conditions of Makievi family on the place. The situation is so hard that the health and life of children are endangered. Besides, despite the state obligation, children cannot receive education as they do not go to school. We are asking to immediately react upon this and ensure the transfer of Makievis to the orphanage,” – states the letter of Human Rights Center.

The head of Lagodekhi Social Agency Tamaz Kakiashvili does not comment on this issue. Kakheti Coordinating Center of the agency stated that they are aware of the severe conditions of children. However “the children’s fate should be decided by the specialists and not by the journalists,” they state.
