Shimon Peres Requests Mikheil Saakashvili to Release Detained Israeli Businessmen

April 6, 2011

Israeli President Shimon Peres petitioned Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and requested freedom of the detained Israeli businessmen. The daughters of the businessmen Zeev Frienkel and Rony Fuchs informed the Jewish newspaper “Ediot Akhronot” about it.

“The President Shimon Peres intends to request his Georgian colleague to release businessmen. We do not know, maybe he has already petitioned to him – we are waiting for the results,” said the daughters of the detainees.

They added that Frienkel and Fuchs can make three phone calls per month; however, the prison administration breaches this rule. According to the daughters, Frienkel often sends letters to Israeli but initially Georgian governmental officials read them before sending to Israeli.

The businessmen were detained in October of 2010 for offering bribe to the deputy minister of finances of Georgia. The Court sentenced Fuchs to seven-year-imprisonment and Zeev Frienkel to 6-year-imprisonment.
