Victim of Social Injustice

April 13, 2011

13-year-old Pikria Dzamiashvili is placed in the reanimation department of Children’s Pediatric Clinic. It has been the fourth day she is unconscious and under respiratory care. Her mother Nino Dzamiashvili states that they are very poor and she could not buy the medicine for the child. Pikria had cramps as a result. Despite their condition, Dzamiashvilis are not receiving social assistance and have no insurance policy. According to Nino Dzamiashvili, the hospital administration asks her to pay money. But she has no money and is forced to let the respiratory system be turned off.

Pikria Dzamiashvili has celebral palsy. The doctor neurologist Naira Shushtakashvili states that she needs systematic medical treatment with expensive medicines. But the family could not afford it.

According to the head of Sighnaghi Department of Social Service Agency Zurab Zurabashvili, the computer calculates the rating number of poor. “We checked this family several times. But they had high rating score. Therefore we could not provide social assistance. A year has been passed from the last examination. We are going to check them again,” – stated Zurabashvili to Kakheti Information Center.

According to Dzamiashvilis, the NGO Center for Civic Activities showed interest in the case of Dzamiashvili family. The NGO advocates for families under the poverty line supported by the East-West Management Institution (EWMI). The lawyers of the organization are going to study the social-economic conditions of Nino Dzamiashvili family and give her legal assistance.
