Marina Bitsadze Addresses Law-Enforcement Officials and Public Defender of Georgia

Marina Bitsadze, a relative of the leader of Democratic Movement Nino Burjanadze addresses the law-enforcement officials and public defender to respond to the incident occurred on April 29th in the Tbilisi International Airport.

As Marina Bitsadze stated, she arrived from Moscow to Tbilisi on April 19th at 15:30pm. According to her, the airport officials separated her from other passengers and conducted search on her. She was deprived of her credit card, cell-phone and documents. Her luggage was also searched.

According to her, she was verbally assaulted. They called her a spy and a “bitch.” According to Bitsadze, two men tied her hands and knocked her head to the wall. She had been locked up for 4 hours. After four hours Marina Bitsadze was released and her belongings were given back to her.

As Bitsadze notes, this is the third incident that happened to her since 2009. She filed a complaint to the court against the Airport on the incident occurred last year, but nobody responded.

Human rights defender Manana Kobakhidze defends the interests of Marina Bitsadze. According to her, today’s incident is the unprecedented case of human rights violation and represents a crime.

According to Kobakhidze, international convention prohibits the detainment of person in the airport for more than 3 hours. Also, it is prohibited for men to search a woman according to international and European Conventions.

Manana Kobakhidze has informed the Georgian public defender on the corresponding.
