MIA and Otar Gvenetadze Are Responsible to Pay Moral Compensation to a Citizen

April 28, 2011
The Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) legally assisted Eka Matiashvili who was physically assaulted by police officer Otar Gvenetadze when police officers forcibly dispersed protest rally of the veterans on January 3, 2011. With the legal assistance of the GYLA Eka Matiashvili brought suit to the Tbilisi City Court and requested compensation for moral damage. The suit was filed against the ministry of internal affairs and the police officer Otar Gvenetadze. The suitor requested 10 000 GEL as a moral compensation.

At the trial on April 27, 2011 both the MIA and Otar Gvenetadze confirmed that they had abused Eka Matiashvili and decided to finish the argument with agreement. Finally, the MIA and Otar Gvenetadze promised to pay 4 000 GEL each (8000 in total) to Eka Matiashvili as moral compensation.

The GYLA is glad that the MIA, as well as police officer Otar Gvenetadze, admitted moral damage of the citizen and expressed desire to pay compensation to her. However, various crimes were observed in the activities of Otar Gvenetadze and other police officers on January 3, 2011 when dispersing the protest rally.

The GYLA calls upon the MIA to impose adequate liability on every person who participated in the incident.
