Investigation Started on Physical Abuse of a Pupil

April 29, 2011
Math teacher at the Vazisubani village public school in Gurjaani district Nunu Iremashvili beat the pupil of the 5th grade. Gurjaani district police office started investigation on the incident under Article 118, Part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

On April 18, the teacher beat the pupil and hit his head against the wall and desk in the classroom.

The Human Rights Center requested corresponding institutions to start investigation on the fact. According to the human rights organization, the national TV-Companies prepared materials on the incident but did not release them in news programs because teacher Nunu Iremashvili is a cousin of the Kakheti regional governor Giorgi Ghviniashvili.

The Human Rights Center believes that the police started investigation of the incident under wrong article on purpose because the physical assault did not seriously damage the health of the child.

“They had to start investigation under Article 125 because it was beating and not premeditated injury of the health. They started investigation under Article 118 because they will not detect the signs of the crime envisaged under the article in the incident and finally, the investigation will be dropped,” said the representatives of the Human Rights Center.
