Football Players Released after Interrogation

Detained football players Bechvaia and Kirtadze have been released after the interrogation. The soccer players detained in Kutaisi are also released.

Georgian Football Federation held special briefing today: “For a year we have been fighting with the referee committee to eradicate such facts. We address Union of European Football Association (UEFA) and International Federation of Football Association; no matter how severe their decision is, we will fulfill it. The one who sells the games and matches of his team, will easily sell his country as well,” – stated Zviad Sichinava.

According to him, the investigation is proceeding and it might be revealed that other football teams are also involved in the similar corruptive agreements. Sichinava thanked the representatives of the law-enforcement organs who revealed this corruptive scheme.

The officials of Constitutional Security Department detained the football players of clubs participating in the national championship on May 2. According to the investigation, they were accused of making corruptive agreements with the representatives of dark business of totalizators.

The following football players were detained: the captain of football club Samtredia Spartak Gogia, football player Kakhaber Kirtadze, the captain of Zugdidi Baia Roin Oniani, football player Levan Vartagava and the football player of Tbilisi Vit-Georgia Giga Bechvaia.

According to the statement of the officials of Constitutional Security Department, they systematically made corruptive agreements with the representative of dark business of totalizators Davit Gabedava and preliminarily planned the results of the game in exchange of large money.

On April 15 of 2011 at the match of Samtredia and Bolnisi Sioni the team of Samtredia received 15 000 GEL. On April 19 of 2011, at the match of Tbilisi Dinamo and Zugdidi Baia, Baia team received 12 000 GEL.

For the match between Vit-Georgia and Sioni held on April 30 of 2011, Vit-Georgia team received 20 000 GEL.

The investigation is underway headed by the Constitutional Security Department.
