People Protested Amended Status of Digomi Forest-Park Again

May 4, 2011

Tbilisi residents protested the amended recreation status of the Digomi forest-park again.

On May 4, discontent people gathered in the Digoimi forest-park. Zurab Abashidze and Viktor Dolidze from the fraction Free Democrats at the Tbilisi City Council participated in the demonstration.

Painter Ana Gabriadze, who had appealed to the court for the amended status, informed the members of the Free Democrats about the court decision and the situation about the park.

Zurab Abashidze and Viktor Dolidze told the journalists they would not agree to sell the territory of the Digomi Park. Ana Gabriadze informed journalists that on May 5 the Appeal Court is discussing their suit on the amendment of the recreation status.

Ana Gabriadze and Caucasian Environmental Non-Governmental Network (CENN) first appealed to the Tbilisi City Court in October 2009. Last year, the City Court seized the status of recreation zone from the Digomi Forest-Park and granted the status of the zone of public activities.

According to Ana Gabriadze, the Digomi Forest-Park occupied 75 hectares of land but nowadays it has been reduced to 20 hectares.

Later, chair of the legal commission of the Tbilisi City Council Nino Tevdoradze responded to the protest demonstration and said recreation status was removed from the 7 hectares of land in the Digomi forest-park due to interests of private owners.

Tevdoradze added that according to the Tbilisi General Plan, Digomi Forest-Park has status of the recreation zone that protects the territory from any constructions. However, in September of 2009, the Tbilisi City Council had to amend the General Plan in order to protect the rights of private owners.

“I want to inform the society that no constructions are going on in the territory where the status was changed. The private owners have had the property rights and permission on construction in this territory since 1999. The new permissions on the construction in the Digomi Forest-Park have not been issued recently. In future, construction and development in the area can be conducted only under the status of rest-park,” said Tevdoradze.
