Tamar Mearkishvili from Akhalgori Calls Upon Prime-Minister to Make Fair Decision

May 11, 2011

Tamar Mearkishvili, an IDP from Akhalgori district, appeals to the Georgian prime-minister Nika Gilauri and requests to make fair decision on the administrative suit of IDPs regarding their compensations.

Tamar Mearkishvili clarified that she has filed complaint to the government’s chancellery and requested compensation of 10 000 USD from the state.

”I have list of 14 families whose compensations of 10 000 USD were assigned to the family members of the local governmental officials according to the suggestions of the district governor. Corresponding institutions clarified the fact by refusal of the initial beneficiaries to accept the compensation though there is no document to prove their refusal. It is strange why the family members of the governmental officials received those compensations. I was on the list of people who rejected the compensation and the Prime Minister has to make decision about my family one of these days. I call upon the prime-minister to make fair decision and prevent the practice which has been actively implemented for the last several years. We see senior-level corruption in the country and let them prevent appearance of the senior-level internal displacement now,” said Tamar Mearkishvili.

She also asked the Akhalgori district administration to clarify the motive of their decision. Tamar Mearkishvili added that relatives of the governmental officials received compensations after the war.

She confirmed that the compensation was allocated for those people who lost their homes as a result of Russian-Georgian armed conflict and cannot return back to their houses.

“Nowadays, I live in Akhalgori and they might tell me that I do not deserve the compensation; but it is fact that international community transferred that particular amount of money for my family. I am ready to appeal to the Strasbourg Court and then I will assign the money to any IDP family from the Liakhvi Gorge who really lost their houses and could not get compensations,” said Tamar Mearkishvili.
