Zaza Khatiashvili Blames Administration of Gldani Prison in Torture of Prisoner

June 24, 2011

The head of the Lawyers Association Zaza Khatiashvili blames the head of Gldani #8 department in the torture of the prisoner.

As interpressnews was informed by the press service of Lawyers Association, the lawyer Lekso Arkania addressed the Lawyers Association and stated that his defendant Malkhaz Arkania was subjected to inhuman treatment in the prison. The lawyer explains that the investigator does not inform him about the proceedings and violates the right of defense along with other rights.

As the Press Service of the association states the lawyer presented an explanation note submitted to the Public Defender on June 22nd of 2011 where he describes how strictly he was beaten in Gldani #8 Prison and how he was made to eat the testimony that the investigation did not like. According to them, on June 23rd of 2011 The Office of Public Defender called the lawyer Lekso Arkania and notified him that they visited the convict in #8 prison who stated that he did not want to continue this case and requested to stop the proceedings which were started based on his explanations.

The Association states that the lawyer Lekso Arkania met his client after talking with the Office of Public Defender. His client told him that after the representative of Public Defender left the office, he was physically abused. In about 30 minutes the head of the prison and the investigator met him.

“The investigator read to him the explanation note that he wrote to Public Defender and then he threatened him and requested him to write that the facts which he is talking about in the letter are the result of the pressure from lawyer. The investigator wrote this statement and then forced Malkhaz Arkania to sign it,” – states the Association.

According to their assessment, this fact once again confirms that the lawyers are under persecution in Georgia. The Lawyers Association requests the investigation on the case of Malkhaz Arkania and requests from the Public Defender to transfer the prisoner to safe environment and carry out urgent medical expertise.
