No Chance of Irakli Okruashvili’s Extradition, according to Experts

June 27, 2011

According to the international law experts, there is no chance of Irakli Okruashvili’s extradition at this stage.

As the assistant professor of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Nino Rukhadze stated to interpressnews, when a state grants a political asylum to the individual, he/she should not be extradited. According to him, granting political asylum means that an individual faces danger from certain country. Thus, no matter what kind of crime this person is charged with, the state granting the political asylum will not transfer defendant. Extradition takes place only in one occasion – when the defendant does not face the danger anymore. In this case the decision is reconsidered. If it is revealed that the individual will be judged impartially and his/her rights will not be violated, then the extradition takes place.

Regarding the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) information, the representative of National Democratic Party Guram Chakhvadze requested Okruashvili’s extradition at today’s session at Parliament. The vice-speaker Mikheil Machavariani agreed.

According to MIA information, Okruashvili was planning to enter Georgia through Tskhinvali with Russian Special Forces.
