Juan Echanove: “High Prices on Meat in Georgia: Do not Blame EU in It!”

June 29, 2011

Agriculture Attaché at EC Delegation in Georgia Juan Echanove spread a special appeal: “High Price on Meat in Georgia! Do not Blame EU!”

“Several Georgian media sources, some politicians allege that price on meat increased due to the EU request to regulate the butchery activities in Georgia. The statement of the Vice-Premier Giorgi Baramidze is particularly noteworthy who said EC economic experts requested to start the process in Georgia before agreements on free trade are signed. In reply to these statements, I would like to declare that Georgian accusations against the EU are groundless. EC agrees with the experts who state that meat price increased in Georgia because of high inflation, because of little support of small farmers from the government, small number of butcheries where animals can be killed, distant location of the butcheries from the areas where farmers usually have cattle, and monopolist increase of butcheries in Georgia,” the statement of the EC representative.

In addition, Echanove underscored that “EC has never requested Georgian side to immediately introduce the regulation to ensure enter of only the meat from butcheries in the markets; moreover, this regulation has never been a pre-condition for signing the agreement on free trading.”
