Sopio Khorguani – “Detained Members of the Georgian Party Were Tortured in the Moduli Building”

July 4, 2011

Georgian Party blames the law enforcement officers in the torture of their detained supporters.

Party representative Sopio Khorguani said at the press-conference in front of the so-called Moduli building (office of the Special Operative Department of the Georgian MIA) that three detainees – Leri and Besik Beritashvilis and Teimuraz Elkanishvili were tortured to compel them to refuse the assistance of the lawyer and state-funded lawyers will represent them at the trial. The detainees were demanded to make confession statements and to name certain people in their testimonies.

Sopio Khorguani said, detainee Gocha Chikhladze was ruthlessly tortured; he has serious health problems and law enforcement officer had to place him in the central hospital.

Khorguani added that information about torture facts were reported by the lawyers who visited the detainees.

As for other detainees, Khorguani said they have not rejected the lawyer’s assistance.

The detainees are accused of illegal purchase, possession and storage of weapon; and participation in the armed formation.
