The New Law Might Work For All Religions Unions Who Has Legal Status in Any EU State

July 6, 2011

The status of public law legal entity might be granted to not only initially listed traditional confessions, but to all other religious unions, which have legal status in any EU state; for example Jehovah Witnesses who have legal status in Germany.

Leader of the public movement Multinational Georgia Arnold Stepanian said about it.

Stepanian does not know whether this particular paragraph was added to the law which was enacted on July 5, but he knows that the parliament is discussing this issue.

As for the law, Stepnian welcomes its adoption and said “hence, there will be no ground in Georgia to discriminate religious minorities.”

“Another point is how adequately the draft-law was prepared. It is also unclear, why the parliament adopted the law so fast. The parliament is entitled to envisage the public requirements so they should have carried out some procedures in order to raise public awareness why legal status shall be granted to other confessions,” said leader of the Multinational Georgia.

As for the respond of the Georgian Patriarchate to the decision of the parliament, Stepanian thinks, “the position of the patriarchate is unclear and disadvantageous.”

“If the Georgian Patriarchate continues its old policy which claimed that granting legal status to other religious unions discriminates the Orthodox Church, it might really cause serious problems in the intolerant Georgian society,” said Arnold Stepanian.
