Mr. Vakhtang Komakhidze, a well-known investigative journalist in Georgia and a Director of Studio Reporter, received death threats from the authorities against him and his family members due to his professional activities following his visit to South Ossetia. In December 2009 together with two other representatives of the civil society he went to the disputed region to gather materials for his documentary movie concerning the Russia-Georgia war of August 2008. After the visit Mr. Komakhidze highlighted that the documentary would disclose many issues yet unknown to the wide public.
As he returned to Tbilisi on December 17, 2009, the smear campaign in the mass media against him by the high ranking politicians has started. After receiving death threats from Georgian authorities Mr. Komakhidze applied for political asylum in Switzerland. He got an asylum in July 2010.
