Ukrainian Colleagues Supporting Detained Photo Reporters

July 15, 2011

Ukrainian public movement Stop Censorship expresses concern regarding the detention of Georgian photo journalists. Ukrainian information agencies disseminated information according to which Ukrainian journalist society knows the detained Georgian photo reporters as the high class professionals who numerous times risked their life to inform the society on Georgia-Russian war.

“Such serious charges and detention of photo reporters should not take place without serious evidence,” – says the statement.

The authors of the statement state that they live in the state where the government and judiciary increasingly abuse their authority including towards the media which is a dangerous tendency. The statement also notes that the trial should be open and the imprisonment substituted by the home arrest or testament of confinement in home.

“The movement Stop Censorship addressed Georgian government to show the neighboring countries good example and stay devoted to the declared course of development of democracy which is impossible without impartial court and free media,” – says the statement.
