Silent Protest “Leave Media!” Held Outside Ministry of Economy

July 28, 2011

Representatives of Coalition for Media Advocacy held a silent protest in front of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. Their slogan was “Leave Media!”

The protesters demand to cancel auction concerning TV tower and specify auction terms. As the protesters say, transferring TV tower into private ownership, will pose threat to televisions and radios not controlled by the government.

Chief of TV Company Kavkasia and the potential investor of the TV tower Nino Jangirashvili submitted letter to the Ministry of economy and Sustainable Development demanding specifying auction terms. Jangirashvili states that she is going to launch legal proceeding against the ministry if she doesn’t receive official response.

Part of the opposition political parties joined the protest, including Zviad Dzidziguri, Koba Davitashvili, Sopio Khorguani, Lasha Chkhartishvili, Aleko Shalamberize, Kakha Dzagania and Giorgi Gugava.

As the opposition party representatives state, they support media and will fight for freedom of speech.
