Office of Public Defender Requests Explanation from Dusheti Municipality Governor

August 3, 2011

Office of Public Defender requests written explanation from the Governor of Dusheti municipality. The Office of Ombudsman wants to know on what basis the individual responsible for issuing public information decided “to try to provide the information before August 23rd requested by Mtskheta-Mtianeti Information Center on July 4th.”

“The public department is obliged to issue public information immediately. According to the article 18 of the Organic Law on Public Defender of Georgia we are requesting the issuance of this information according to the article 23 of this law and the documentation reflecting this information,” – states the head of Justice Department of Office of Public Defender in the letter sent to the Governor of Dusheti municipality.

Mtskheta-Mtianeti Information Center addressed Dusheti Municipality local government and the City Council with more than 15 written requests and several administrative complaints. According to one of the requests, Mtskheta-Mtianeti Information Center was requesting the information on the amount of money spent for the rehabilitation of drinking water system in 2004-1022 in the city of Dusheti. Dusheti local government notified the journalist that “they will try to provide information till August 23rd of 2011.”

The editor of Mtskheta-Mtianeti Information Center Manana Vardiashvili considers that Dusheti municipality local government unlawfully restricted her right to receive and disseminate information in the terms established by the law. Therefore she addressed Public Defender.
