Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe Expresses Concern over the Violation of Principle of Gender Balance

September 13, 2011

Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe expresses concern over the violation of principle of gender balance in Caucasian countries.

Committee on Equal Opportunities of Council of Europe states that while family planning parents prefer male children over female children in the following countries: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Albania. The decision is made before the child is born which, according to the PMs of Parliamentary Assembly hinders the development of society.

According to the conclusions of European sociologists, for normal development of society, the sex ration should be 100 girls to 105 boys. In the countries of Southern Caucasus this standard is violated. In Georgia it is 111 boys to 100 girls. The report states that the sex selection should be allowed only in exceptions when the case concerns genetic illnesses.

According to Doris Stump, deputy from Switzerland, male sex selection before the birth of child is the outcome of gender inequality and reflects the violence towards the woman which contradicts European values.

New report will be discussed at the plenary session of Council of Europe which will be held on October 3-7.
