School in a Hut

September 15, 2011

Primary school of Vedzatkhevi village in Dusheti district is located in a hut. The hut is made of twig and clay. Rubber pieces are stretched on the walls to cover holes in it. There is a blackboard, a desk, four chairs, teacher’s table and oven in the “classroom”.

Before January 2010, the primary school of Vedzatkhevi was functioning in a private house but after a landslide destroyed the house, the only teacher of the school Imeda Zviadauri moved the “school” near his house in the neighboring village of Okruani.

There are three pupils at school – one pupil in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth grades. Their lessons are held in one class-room simultaneously.

“First I write alphabet for the first year pupil; then I write exercises for the second-grade pupil on the blackboard. In parallel to it, I am explaining lesson to a pupil of the third grade and the fourth year pupils is doing his homework at that moment… We work in similar regime,” teacher of Vedzatkhevi school Imeda Zviadauri described the lesson in his school. He has been working there since 1970. The teacher of almost 70 teaches every subject to pupils.

Foreign language is not taught in Vedzatkhevi primary school. Pupils do not attend sport or music lessons either.

“We do not have teachers of foreign languages in larger schools and who will go there for 4 working hours?” asked Tina Bantsuri, head of Dusheti district educational resource-center.
