Family of Nugzar Sharikadze Blames Penitentiary Ministry in His Death

October 3, 2011

Family blames the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid of Georgia in the death of prisoner Nugzar Sharikadze in Geguti prison.

On October 30, the family of the late prisoner and representatives of the NGOs held press-conference in front of the Ministry.

Eka Beselia, head of public movement Solidarity with Illegal Prisoners, said Sharikadze died because of inhuman and criminal actions of the Minister Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, ministry officials and chief doctor of the custody.

According to Beselia, proper medical treatment was not provided for the prisoner. The family was noted about prisoner’s poor health conditions a day before his death; and his body was delivered to the family without inner organs.

Beselia and prisoner’s family members have already filed complaint to the Ministry. They have also appealed to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office and requested to launch investigation.

Widow of the late prisoner Marine Kalandadze said she has not received any information or expertise conclusion on the death causes since September 17, when her husband died. Moreover, the family members did not attend the expertise and were not informed about it either.

Kalandadze said unofficially they were told Sharikadze died of stroke though the dead person had neither black complexion, nor his eyes were fallen nor his nose was divided as it usually happens when a person dies of stroke. The widow alleges her husband had injuries on the head.

Beselia said Sharikadze was due to leave the prison in two months. Besides that, on September 1, one more prisoner Giorgi Martiashvili died in the same prison and he also had to leave the custody within 7 days.
