Parliamentary Majority Backed Down As a Result of Pressure from Public Organizations

October 17, 2011

Parliament withdrew the Draft Law on Changes and Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts out of consideration. The draft law envisaged permitting hunting on animals and plants of species of red list of Georgia.

As the deputy head of Environmental Committee of Parliament Zaza Gamtsemlidze stated he managed to persuade his colleagues not to adopt new rules and procedures against the animals and plants which are facing danger of extinction.

International and local environmental organizations expressed singlehanded negative position towards the draft law. Several days ago, Caucasia Office of World Wildlife Fund disseminated a statement which states that it is categorically inadmissible to permit hunting in national parks and on the species of red list.
