UNESCO Added Abkhaz Language to the List of Endangered Languages

October 25, 2011

UNESCO officially added Abkhaz language to the list of endangered languages.

Echo Kavkaza reports that “current crucial situation, of course, did not start yesterday. The disaster of Muhajirs in XIX century turned Abkhazia into a country inhabited with ethnic population whose communication language gradually but steadily became Russian language.”

“Georgian demographic and political expansion also resulted into current situation which started by changing Abkhazian schools into Georgian ones. After Abkhazia declared independence, they hoped there would be no more obstacles for changing the situation for better but the scope of the state language between international community, in public places and media did not increase. Young generation grown up in Abkhazian towns does not properly know native language. Serious steps shall be taken in the state policy for the maintenance and development of Abkhaz language,” said reporter Vitaly Sharia.
