Next Two Elections in Georgia Would Be Significant Test for the NATO

October 27, 2011

James Appathurai, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia stated during his visit in Tbilisi on October 27 that “two very important elections are to be held in Georgia for the next two years and they will be significant tests for the NATO.”

“The decision taken in Bucharest has not been changed; thus Georgia and Ukraine will definitely join the organization but the principle point is whether those countries meet the NATO standards or not. Ukrainian authority has changed its position and no longer strives for the NATO. We respect their decision; as for Georgian government they still work for the integration. Consequently, the Bucharest decision has not changed but successful reforms will support Georgia’s integration into the NATO. I mean both practical and political reforms. Two elections are scheduled for the next two years in Georgia and it will be significant test for us. I will raise these questions in Georgia and will discuss the ongoing democratic reforms in the country,” said Appathurai.
