Russian Duma Elections Were Held in Abkhazia and Ossetia As Well

December 6, 2011

Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs disseminates statement regarding the fact of holding Russia’s parliamentary elections in the occupied territories of Georgia.

As the statement notes Russian Federation held elections of state Duma in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region illegally on December 4th of 2011 by violating fundamental principles of international law without consulting Georgia’s central government.

”Russian Central Election Commission opened 12 so called "electoral districts" in the occupied territories. Constituency participating in elections was represented by the segment of the local population, which, as a result of the illegal passportization, possesses Russian passports and personnel of the Russian occupation forces.

By doing so, Russian Federation once again violated universally accepted principles of the international law. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia calls upon the international community to adequately asses mentioned violation,” – reads the statement of Ministry.

Elections of state Duma were held in Russia on December 4th. The election districts were opened in the occupied Tskhinvali and Abkhazia as well.
