“Georgia Is Unlikely to Enter EU Earlier Than Turkey”

January 17, 2012

Project manager at the Delegation of the EU to Georgia Doctor Oliver Reisner thinks “Georgia is unlikely to enter EU earlier than Turkey.”

Reisner told the Pirveli that “meanwhile Georgia can meet “Copenhagen Criteria” estimated for the seekers of the EU membership.”

“It is issue of political competences. 10 years ago nobody spoke about Georgia’s approaching the EU. Let us see how circumstances will develop in future. I personally witnessed 10-year dynamic development of the Georgian-EU relations. It is my personal view that nobody will enroll Georgia into the EU before Turkey because the latter has been an associated EU member for a long time and it will not nice of the EU to accept any other country from the region earlier than Turkey. Meanwhile, Georgia can harmonize its national legislation in accordance to the Copenhagen Criteria for membership after what you can say: “We are ready!” Reisner said and added, “The point is that few debates on this issue are held on TV, in the society and families.”
