Russia to Launch Large-Scale Military Training in Occupied Regions of Georgia

January 17, 2012

Russia plans a large-scaled military training: “Kavkasia 2012,” in the occupied regions of Georgia.

In December of 2011, during the meeting with the military attachés accredited in Moscow, the head of General Headquarters of the Russian Federation Makarov said that in September 2012 they plan to start strategic training: “Kavkasia 2012”.

According to the Nezavisimaia Gazeta, in comparison with last year’s training, the trainings this year will be more strategic and much closer to current political realities.

The trainings are scheduled for autumn and they will take place in the southern regions of Russia, as well as in Abkhazia, Tskhinvali region and Armenia. They are working on the training scenario which envisages possible war between Iran and the USA and other countries as well as other possible conflicts in the Caspian region and South Caucasus.

“The training with the same title was held from July 16, to August 2, 2008 at the borders with South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Kavkasia 2008 played the key role in the defeat of Georgia during the 2008 August conflict,” Nezavisimaia Gazeta wrote.

The newspaper added that the new training will not be an operative-tactic but strategic one and it will involve not only armed forces but naval, air, military-space defense, air-landing forces, MIA, security, and defense federal and emergency situation services.

The Management system “Barnaul – T” of the anti-air defense forces will be used during the training.

“This system already controls the air of Russia and the South Caucasus. It is significant because the 102nd military base deployed in Armenia is far from other units of military base,” the newspaper wrote.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry’s sources, not only forces subordinated to the defense ministry will participate in the training, but the forces of the MIA, Security Federal Service (ФСБ), Ministry of Emergency Situations (МЧС), and Federal Service of Defense (ФСО) as well as officers of other law enforcement structures. They plan to check all sorts of intelligence and communication equipment – online, space, pilotless aircrafts and weapon of high accuracy.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement regarding “Kavkasia 2012”. According to the foreign ministry, Russia purposefully implements militarization of the occupied territories of Georgia, develops military infrastructure there and deploys armament there in order to provoke permanent tension in Georgia and in the Black Sea region as a whole.

“The international community shall pay attention to the fact that Russia’s external policy has not changed. It continues aggressive activities including demonstration of its military power and provocations. Russia is a source of destabilization and negative incidents on the international level,” reads the statement of the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
