Free Democrats about Disparage of Historical Inheritance in Ozurgeti

March 2, 2012
Ozurgeti district office of Free Democrats blames the local authority in disparage of historical heritage.

On March 2, the head of the organization Temur Salukvadze said at the press-conference in Ozurgeti that remnant of ancient historical buildings were discovered during the construction of the Justice House in the center of town; though the local authority did not respond to it.

Salukvadze said the local authority hid the information from the population and covered the ancient historical heritage with sand. He added that according to historical sources, Gurieli Fortress was located in the area, two bathe-houses – one was functioning in the Gurieli Palace and the second was dated by antic epoch.

“Our representatives arrived at the place and took photos of the historical remnants. This fact repeatedly proved our allegation that the construction place was wrongly selected. In general, the selection of construction place does not meet the requirements of the town development standards and conclusions of professional geologists. This government wants to build future at the expense of past that is irregular and unnatural process,” the chair of the Ozurgeti district office of the Free Democrats said.

The Free Democrats call on the specialists of the Region Museum to actively interfere in the process and to inform the society about the fact.

The political parties also called upon the local authority to inform all relevant institutions about it. “We do not know the historical value of the discovered remnants. It might be unique historical heritage. So we request corresponding institutions and professionals to study the issue.”
