Akaki Bobokhidze: “US Ambassador cannot Give Directives to Georgia”

March 21, 2012

Member of Parliamentary majority, head of Committee of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources repeats that US ambassador cannot give directives to Georgian government. Bobokhidze stated following first with the newspaper Versia when he commented on the question of US ambassador’s John Bass’s comment on acts of Chamber of Control of Georgia.

After Bobokhidze’s interview was published in Versia, journalists of different media outlets asked MP to explain what he meant. As he explained the first and utmost motive of acts of government is Georgian population and not the US ambassador. Palitra tv disseminates video comments of Bobokhidze.

“We got used to the situation when some US representative sits in Georgia and his word is decisive for Georgian people and government. Not only the opinion of US ambassador, but opinion of any ambassador should be taken into account. But this is not a directive. US ambassador cannot give directive to Georgian government. But if he does and government takes it, I do not want neither such government nor ambassador. Are we independent state or US puppet,” – Bobokhidze stated and added that US position is important but not decisive.

Parliamentary opposition reacted on Bobokhidze’s statements. One of the leaders of Christian-Democrats Levan Vepkhvadze called on government to “come to senses.” Vepkhvadze stated with interpressnews that it is awkward when majority representatives talk about the ambassador of the country with who Georgia has made partner agreement like that.

“We have threats and if we stay in front of these threats alone, we know what can happen. This means that they are ready to sacrifice country to maintain power. This is how I would assess their statements and I call on them to come to senses. It will not be good for Georgia to stay alone in front of Russia and other threats,” – Levan Vepkhvadze stated.
