John Bass: “I Suggest Georgian Government to Promptly Process the Issue of Ivanishvili’s Citizenship in Compliance with Equality Principle”

April 5, 2012

I suggest the government of Georgia to promptly process the issue of Ivanishvili’s citizenship in compliance with the equality principle, US Ambassador to Georgia John Bass told journalists in Radisson Hotel Tbilisi where he attended the presentation of Tuberculosis Treatment and Prevention New Program.

“The US Authority believes that losing citizenship or related issues shall be regulated through equality principle before the law. We suggest the government of Georgia to promptly process the issue of Ivanishvili’s citizenship in compliance with the equality principle under the law,” Bass said.

Reportedly, on April 4, the Civil Registration Agency of the Ministry of Justice released a conclusion which refused Ivanishvili to obtain Georgian citizenship through naturalization. According to the CRA conclusion, Bidzina Ivanishvili shall apply to dual-citizenship procedures to receive the citizenship.

Georgian citizenships were stripped off Bidzina Ivanishvili and his wife Ekaterina Khvedelidze based on the president’s decree on October 11, 2011. Later, the Court annulled the decree only with regard Ekaterina Khvedelidze. Afterwards, Bidzina Ivanishvili requested Georgian citizenship through naturalization.
