Georgian Dream’s Activists Claim They Were Dispersed by Water Cannon

May 3, 2012

Kutaisi office representatives of the political coalition Georgian Dream stated they had decided to hold the symbolic demonstration regarding the Kutaisi Day on May 2.

“We intended to hold the assembly after 10-11:00 pm on the White Bridge. We wanted to write with candles “Happy May 2” and to finish our demonstration with fireworks. But as soon as they learned it, the activists of the National Movement gathered on the White Bridge and started their event,” Nato Katamadze, head of the Republic Party’s Kutaisi office said.

She added that in order to avoid the provocation and incidents, the participants moved towards the Agmashenebeli statue.

“We passed by the Kutaisi City Hall building where two fire-trucks were parked. Having seen us they drove in our direction and opened water cannon on us,” Nato Katamadze said.

Despite that, Georgian Dream’s activists continued their way towards the Agmashenebeli statue in station square. Katamadze said they have video-recorded the fire-engines following them.

“Not only fire-engines but City Hall officials also followed us. Among them were Tutberidze- head of Kutaisi City Service, Tsaava- head of the department, Kakha Khvareshia – former employee of the auto-factory and currently employee of the City Hall; Khvareshia was particularly active. We could not recognize other people in the darkness but we video-recorded them,” Nato Katamadze said.

Despite the incident, the Georgian Dream’s activists managed to finish their demonstration.

Keti Deisadze, head of public relation department at the Kutaisi City Hall, told Netgazeti that she had not heard anything about this incident at all: “I can neither confirm nor deny the information because you are the first to tell me about this incident.”
