Round Table – “Institutional Persecution of Lawyers in Georgia”

On May 11, Round Table “Institutional Persecution of Lawyers in Georgia” was organized in the office of the Georgian Bar Association with the initiative of the Human Rights House Tbilisi from 12:00 to 15:00 pm.

The round table had working character and only human rights nongovernmental organizations and lawyers took part in it.

The Round Table was organized with the support of the Georgian Bar Association. Deputy chair of the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee Dimitry Lortkipanidze and head of Department for Justice at the Public Defender’s Office Irakli Mzhavanadze participated in the Round Table.

The purpose of the Round Table was to give opportunity to human rights defenders and lawyers to analyze the current situation in the field of advocacy and to find ways to improve inter-communication and their communication with the society. Additionally, the participants worked out action plan and campaign against the institutional persecution of lawyers in order to have more impact on current alarming processes in the Georgian justice through reinforced civic engagement.

Human Rights House Tbilisi member organizations Human Rights Center and Article 42 of the Constitution also participated in the Round Table. Besides them, Former Prisoner for Human Rights, Public Advocacy, Georgian Young Lawyers Association, Solidarity with Illegal Prisoners and Caucasian Women’s Network joined the discussion.

President of the Georgian Bar Association Zaza Khatiashvili spoke about institutional persecution of lawyers in Georgia in his introductory speech. Dimitry Lortkipanidze offered the Parliament’s tribune to the NGO sector to discuss their problems. Irakli Mzhavanadze said the Public Defender is ready to respond to every fact of lawyer’s persecution.

Lawyers Keti Bekauri, Natia Korkotadze, Keti Vardanashvili, Jumber Milorava, Irina Saginadze took part in the discussion. The members worked out future action plans of cooperation.
