National Movement Member Blames Georgian Dream In Bribing of Voters

May 15, 2012

Head of Kakheti regional organization of the United National Movement Giorgi Botkoveli blamed the political coalition Georgian Dream in bribing of voters.

Botkoveli told ICK that during the meeting at the Telavi District Center for Democratic Engagement Zaza Devidze from the Georgian Dream stated that their political coalition installs satellite antennas in the villages to receive signals of TV-Companies Channel 9 and Maestro for free.

“Activist and founder of the Georgian Dream Zaza Devidze publicly announced that he is member of the Georgian Dream and regional manager of the Global TV; he said the government hinders them to install antennas in the villages. Of course, it is not true. Georgian Dream members really visit villages and offer local population to install the antenna for free that is bribery of voters. I think, the Chamber of Control and corresponding organizations, which monitor pre-election processes in the country, must study this case. Representatives of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association and Fair Elections also attended the meeting in the Center for Democratic Engagement and they also heard the statement,” Giorgi Botkoveli said.

“Alongside installment of antennas, the Georgian Dream’s activists offer the population to join their coalition and promise them to pay 200 GEL, 300 GEL and even 500 GEL for it. Similar facts occur quite frequently. Local population inform us about it and we actively work to expose similar cases,” the head of the regional office of the ruling party said.

During the close meeting in the Telavi District Center for Democratic Engagement on May 14, Zaza Devidze stated that he simultaneously occupied the position of the manager at the Global TV’s Kakheti office. Devidze said Global TV offers to install satellite antenna under 10-year installment. “We sign agreement with the client and then we install the antenna together with the receiver. The subscribers will not pay anything for the first year but during the rest 9 years they will have to pay 4 GEL per month that makes 432 GEL in total. It has nothing to do with the bribery of voters,” Zaza Devidze told the ICK.
