Reasons for Resignation of Deputy Head of Tianeti Police Department

June 4, 2012

Olympic champion Zviad Zviadauri, who joined the Coalition Georgian Dream on May 14, stated that deputy head of Tianeti police department Zurab Udzilauri was sacked because of friendship with him. Zurab Zviadauri is godfather of Udzilauri’s son.

“He was sacked because of his friendship with me and our phone conversations. Zurab was requested to stop contact with me or otherwise he would be fired. He preferred to quit job,” Zviadauri told ICMM.

ICMM could not get in touch with Zurab Udzilauri. His phone number is unavailable.

On May 30, head of press-service at the MIA Zurab Gvenetadze confirmed the information with the Information Center of Kakheti that one of the deputy heads of Tianeti police office was fired. Gvenetadze added that he had quitted job based on his personal resignation letter.

We kindly remind you that, Mamuka Shalamberidze, who arbitrarily detained journalist Gela Mtivlishvili when the latter was taking photos of the police office on May 20 in Tianeti, still occupies the position of the deputy head of Tianeti police department. Shalamberidze and two more police officers forcibly dragged Gela Mtivlishvili into the police building, beat him, seized camera, erased photo and video footage from it and kept him in the police office during one hour. Mamuka Shalamberidze was supervising the detention process; he was receiving instructions from the chief police officer on the phone. Shalamberidze personally beat the journalist. Gela Mtivlishvili was taken to Tianeti medical center by ambulance where doctors diagnosed bruise on the head and brain concussion.

Prosecutor’s office launched investigation on the incident on May 30 though the journalist had appealed to them on May 21.
