Public Defender Requests Investigation of Facts of Violation of Convicts’ Rights

27.06.2012
Public Defender of Georgia released a recommendation to the Prosecutor General of Georgia “to start investigation of the alleged mass violation of the rights of convicts in the new area of the Ksani Prison #15.

Public Defender Giorgi Tugushi’s letter reads that facts speak about different types of abuse and violation of rights of convicts by the prison management.

“Convicts claim that they are often abused verbally and physically.  Physical abuse takes place when convicts arrive at prison and before they are taken to separate cells.  Usage of illegal methods of punishment for small misconducts also often takes place,” Public Defender’s letter reads.

It is also stressed that landline phone often do not work in the prison; and convicts do not receive press and do not have radio sets.
