Citizens Associated with Komagi Foundation Interrogated in Illegal and Inhuman Environment – NGO Statement

June 18, 2012

We, undersigned organizations, are concerned about recent facts in relation with the Komagi Foundation.

Reportedly, on June 9, Constitutional Security Department of the MIA launched mass summoning of people, who had applied to the Foundation for help.

Several people were forcibly taken to the so-called Moduli building [MIA office] soon after the summons were delivered to them. Nobody explained them motive of their questioning in the MIA office. Citizens could not enjoy their right to defense. The interrogation lasted long; in several cases it lasted even 10 hours.

Givi Kuridze was operated in Infection Hospital; soon after the operation law enforcement officers took the patient, who was in poor conditions, to the Moduli office for interrogation despite strict protest of doctors. The sick person was interrogated for a long time without lawyer. Givi Kuridze said he felt bad during interrogation; his surgery wound was aching and bleeding. Despite all that, law enforcement officers continued his questioning. Meanwhile, Kuridze felt bad and they called ambulance; the emergency brigade took him back to hospital. He is still in hospital and taking medical treatment.

Manana Gurgenashvili was taken to Moduli office at 10:00 pm without preliminary warning. Strangers visited him at home and requested to follow them. They showed her summon which stated that she was to be interrogated as a witness; though the summon was not handed to her as it is required by the law. Besides that neither she nor her family members were clarified why she was summoned for interrogation and about what particular case she was immediately taken to Moduli office and interrogated.

Other citizens were also subjected to similar illegal activities: Marekhi Vazhbedashvili, Leila Cheishvili, Manana Jajanashvili, Nugzar belkania, Lamzira Korchishvili.

We believe that abovementioned facts breach fundamental human rights and undermine the principles declared by the government of Georgia.

The undersigned NGOs request to investigate those illegal activities and punish perpetrators.

We also appeal to Public Defender of Georgia, international organizations and diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia to respond to these facts.
