Article 42 Criticizes Draft Legislative Amendments about Government’s Activities

July 5, 2012
Nongovernmental organization Article 42 believes the draft-amendments to the Law about Structure, Authority and Activities of the Government of Georgia, which was submitted to the Parliament of Georgia for endorsement, undermines accountability level of the government “which will finally decrease its accountability towards the society.”

According to the organization’s statement, till now the government’s session was empowered if at least 9 out of 16 ministers attended it and votes of only 6 ministers were enough to pass resolution. According to the new initiative, the government will have right to change this regulation that means the government will have absolute authority to pass resolution with the participation of only two ministers.

The government of Georgia verifies the initiative by their intention to make activities of the ministers’ cabinet more flexible and effective while the acting law claims that the government is entitled to gather once per month but according to its regulations they hold sessions once per week that increases their accountability, decreases level of selfishness and will not hinder effective activities of the government.
