Victim of Hybrid Corn Program Threatens With Suicide in front of UNM Office

July 10, 2012

Nodar Luashvili, resident of Bakurtsikhe village in Gurjaani district, who was damaged by hybrid corn state program and lost the house, threatens with suicide in front of the United National Movement’s Office.

“Our eviction was temporarily stopped after journalists got interested in our case but I cannot pay the debt. I have nothing to sell and soon they will expel us from home. I have petitioned to every institution for help but nobody has paid attention to us. I am going to burn myself in front of the UNM office in order to show my tragedy to people,” Nodar Luashvili said.

Nodar Luashvili involved State Program for the Promotion of Hybrid Corn Production and in order to get rich harvest, he leased about 10 hectares plot. Nodar Luashvili also took a loan to cultivate the land; he signed contract with the Agriculture Corporation and was waiting for hybrid corn seed from them. The Corporation deceived him and did not give the seed. Thus, the peasant could not pay the debt and several days ago police forcibly evicted him from home together with his old parents.
