Prosecutor’s office made a statement about seizing Kakhi Kaladze’s accounts

July 30, 2012
The Prosecutor’s office made a statement about seizing the accounts of Kakhi Kaladze, one of the leaders of Georgian Dream. Interpressnews is republishing the statement:

"Based on information received from the Ministry of Finance, the National Bank of Georgia has launched an investigation regarding the possible legalization of illegal income.

According to the information received, recently nearly 6 million dollars have been transferred to the bank accounts of Kakhi Kaladze. From these accounts there was a big amount of cash flow in a short period of time, something that was deemed suspicious activity according to Georgian legislation and international standards. To be exact, in recent months, 1,600,000 lari was withdrawn from Kaladze’s accounts and this money was not observed in any of the other banking institutions. Also, there is no document that could verify that this money was used for civil arrangements [payment of bills etc].

It is important to mention that in the same period of time, an additional 900,000 lari was withdrawn for private and household expenses, showing that Kakhi Kaladze uses bank accounts rather than cash for civil arrangements.

In accordance with Georgian law and international standards to combat money laundering, the investigation into the transfer of a large sum of cash (1 600 000) is obligatory and until the transfer has been investigated and any suspicious transactions examined, the bank accounts will remain frozen,” – the statement of the Prosecutor’s office reads.

Kakhi Kaladze learned about the seizing of his bank accounts on July 26.
