Paata Zakareishvili speaks about Oppression

September 14, 2012

Mari Tabidze, Tskaltubo

On September 6 Bera Ivanishvili visited Kutaisi with concert called “I promise you”. Beka Giorgberidze and Giorgi Babunashvili were on their way to Tskaltubo from Kutaisi when Tskaltubo police officers arrested them and took to the police department.

Beka Giorgberidze is the member of the coalition Georgian Dream in Tskaltubo organization. Giorgi Babunashvili is his close friend. Giorgberidze was dressed in Georgian Dream’s shirt and this irritated the law enforcers.

The youths were released few hours later. As they said police insulted them physically and verbally. The law enforcers demanded the detainees to leave Georgian Dream’s Tskaltubo organization.

Paata Zakareishvili-the majoritarian candidate of the coalition Georgian Dream in Tskaltubo held briefing two days after their release. He spoke about violation of law and oppression during pre-election period. Giorgi Babunashvili also attended the briefing and he joined the Georgian Dream’s Tskaltubo organization during the briefing.

“When I saw that police officers were beating my friend I realized what the matter was. The reason of the detention was the Georgian Dream’s t-shirt. That is why I decided to come here and become a member of the coalition,” Giorgi Babunashvili stated at the briefing. He dressed the Georgian Dream shirt just in front of cameras of media sources.

“Giorgi was an ordinary young man who wanted to attend Bera Ivanishvili’s concert. The only reason for his arresting was the shirt his friend was wearing. This fact proves that governmental institutions are involved in the pre-election campaign and exceed their authority. Though, this is neither first nor last case of law violation during the pre-election period. Thus, we appealed to the international organizations and gave them information about all intimidation facts. We try to respond to all similar cases and make them known to everybody,” Paata Zakareishvili-the Tskaltubo majoritarian candidate of the coalition Georgian Dream stated.

Makhat Kostava was another victim of oppression. He is activist and member of the coalition. Tskaltubo supervisory service blamed him in the violation of the law with regard to usage of his estate without any explanation. As they stated Makhat Kostava had misappropriated his neighbor’s plot years ago. Makhat Kostava will supposedly be fined from 1 000 to 1 500 lari for breaking the law.
