Result of Students’ Rallies – Minister of Interior Quitted

September 21, 2012

Thousands demonstrators, mostly students have been marching in Tbilisi streets for three days already to condemn prisoners abuse and ill-treatment and demand accountability of senior governmental officials.

Demonstrators choose Tbilisi Concert Hall (philarmonia), Tbilisi State University, Public Broadcaster, so called Moduli Building (office of the Special Operative Department of the Georgian MIA) and Chief Prosecutor’s Office as a starting point for their marching.

On September 20, participants of the rally – the largest protest of students in Georgia for many years – are calling for resignation of Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia, who was prison system chief in 2005-2008 and who allegedly kept informally overseeing prison system up until now.

In an attempt not to make the rally associated with any of the political party, participants have called against carrying of flags of any party.

On September 20, Minister of Interior Bacho Akhalaia resigned.
