World Champion and Activist of the Georgian Dream Mamuka Jananashvili Arrested

September 24, 2012
Mamuka Jananashvili, an activist and head of mobile groups, was arrested in Khovle village in Kaspi. Interpresnews’ correspondent reports that Jananashvili was arrested in his house.  His father Pavle Jananashvili said that on September 23 at 06:00 am about 15 police officers burst into their house and started search procedures.

“I asked them to produce search warrant but they did not; they withdrew and confiscated carbine and gun bullets from the drawer were I and my wife keep personal items and linen,” Pavle Jananashvili said.

He said police officers had planted bullets in the wardrobe. Jananashvili reported his family had been warned about some provocations against his family several times recently.

Mamuka Jananashvili is world champion and prize winner of several European tournaments in wrestling. He is police major but has not worked for police for three years. He had permission to have a gun.

Right now Jananashvili is in the Kaspi police office. His lawyer arrived from Tbilisi and has not had chance to meet him yet.

Members of the Georgian Dream told IPN that only motive of Mamuka Jananashvili’s arrest was his different political opinion.

Also, it was reported that several other people were also arrested in Gori. As Interpressnews correspondent reports, all of them are either Georgian Dream members or supporters.
