Senior Officials of Rustavi Prison #16 Exposed in Beating of Prisoners Dismissed

October 3, 2012

On September 28 Human Rights Centre published a collective letter of prisoners of Rustavi prison #16. The prisoners named those officers and senior officials of the prison who physically abused them.

“You all know that since the new facility was opened in the Prison #16 years ago, our rights have been regularly violated. Davit Mumladze-the deputy director, Ilo Lutidze-the security director, Giorgi Jgarkava-regime officer and Temur Korshia-the officer abused and intimidated us,” prisoners wrote in the letter.

According to the unofficial information Davit Mumladze-the deputy director of Rustavi prison #16 and ILo lutidze-the security director are dismissed.

We contacted press center of the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid of Georgia to check the information. They forwarded us to general inspection. The latter suggested us to contact the penitentiary department and the department requested to apply to them in written form. “We do not have this information. Appeal us in written form, we will clear up the situation and write to you”,-they answered us on the phone.

On the Election Day Humanrights.ge entered the territory of the Rustavi prison #16. After leaving the election station we were able to speak with prison security officers. They confirmed the information that Davit Mumladze-the deputy director and Ilo Lutidze-the security director were dismissed. In addition we checked this information with the officers of public reception-room. They also confirmed that Mumladze and Lutidze were dismissed.

The leader of the coalition Georgian Dream-Bidzina Ivanishvili applied to the government to dismiss all the violators before the coalition comes in the government.
