Kutaisi has a new Mayor

October 9, 2012

On October 8, the city council approved a new mayor in Kutaisi. Besik Bregadze, a member of the majority party in the city council was appointed to his new position. The opposition thinks that the new mayor was appointed in a rushed way and that it will bring only bad things for the city.

Mamuka Mgvdeladze, a member of the right wing in the city council says that this decision will lead the city into a deadlock because the new mayor will be unable to cooperate with the new government. He thinks that the city council members are still in the old times and they are acting in this way due to fear.

Despite the quarrel, the majority was able to appoint the new mayor for Kutaisi.  Besik Bregadze, a former deputy of the National Movement states: “I consider myself as a soldier in the rehabilitation process of Kutaisi. We have so many things to do”.

George Tevdoradze, the former mayor, left his post on August 26 due to his participation in the parliamentary elections. Despite the fact that he lost the elections in the majoritarian list against Gubaz Sanikidze, he still was able to enter the parliament from the proportional list for National Movement, where he was number 5 in the list.
