Ministry of Economy Stopped Privatization of Republic Hospital

October 11, 2012

Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia stopped procedures to put agreement on privatization of Tbilisi Republic Hospital in force.

The Ministry released statement about the decision. “Based on the decree of the President of Georgia and under the authority granted by the government of Georgia on July 20, 2011, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and Interhealth Canada Ltd signed privatization agreement on Kipshidze Central University Hospital. The requirement of the agreement was to maintain medical profile of the clinic and to create modern hospital in its base. The agreement also includes some technical pre-conditions and as soon as they are met, the agreement will go in force. At this moment, the process of implementing pre-conditions has not finished yet and the Civil Registration Agency did not register the investor’s property. For the same motive, the purchaser did not pay the privatization fee. With regard to formation of new government of Georgia the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development stopped the procedures necessary to put the agreement in force.”

On October 10, minister of healthcare-to-be Amiran Gamkrelidze requested to stop privatization procedures of the republic hospital. He said at the press-conference in the Georgian Dream’s central office that according to his information, the privatization process was going on in haste and contract was already signed with foreign company.
