Convict Claims Data Akhalaia Also Participated in His Torture

October 17, 2012

On September 28, 2012, convict Giorgi Chikhladze applied to the chairperson Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association with an application, describing human rights violations that he was subjected to during his arrest on June 30, 2011.

The convict explains that Data Akhalaia was also involved in these illegal actions together with other individuals. Namely, he alleges that after detention CSD officers delivered him to the so-called Moduli building, office of the MIA’s departments, where he was tortured by electro-shock; then he was taken to Data Akhalaia’s working room. “Data Akhalaia told me - you know what I can do and tell me everything you know about Orkuashvili. I told him everything but he did not like and started beating me. He was beating me by wooden but. One more person was beating me together with him…” Giorgi Chikhladze wrote in his statement.

According to the GYLA’s assessment, the facts reported in the application constitute criminal offences, which may serve as grounds for launching a probe. Therefore, today, on October 11, GYLA referred the application to the office of the prosecutor, requesting a probe into the alleged facts cited in the application.

GYLA demands that the office of the chief prosecutor ensure independent, impartial and objective investigation of the alleged fact, as well as to provide for safety of the convict.
