October 19, 2012

Former Kakheti regional governor Bidzina Songulashvili sold 120 hectares of land, located on the embankment of Alazani River in Gurjaani district, sold to Indians. Reportedly, purchasers paid 2 600 USD per hectare of the land to the former governor.

According to ICK’s information, Bidzina Songulashvili purchased the land from private owners 4-5 years ago and paid 800-1000 lari (app 500USD) for one hectare. Songulashvili told ICK that the purchase procedures have not finished yet and he does not know what Indians intend to do in the land. He added he was not the only owner of the 120 hectare of land though he did not mention other owners.

Former regional governor owns agricultural and industrial markets in Gurjaani, hotel complex Rebi Gurjaani and several buildings in the center of Gurjaani. He has registered part of his property on his sister and nephews.

Bidzina Songulashvili was Kakheti regional governor in 2002.
