Soso Kimeridze’s Family Complains About Harassment

November 2, 2012
The family of Soso Kimeridze, who died in the Khashuri district police office, has been being harassed by police officers.

Soso Kimeridze’s son, Givi Kimeridze, said that people who made comments to journalists before his father’s funeral, were harassed by police. The police warned the family members not to make any further comments to journalists by threat of death.

Givi Kimeridze added that their family has been under harassment for nine months; on October 2, during the second day of the parliamentary elections, he and his friend were physically assaulted by police officers.

“They came here by police vehicle; they were in uniforms and had guns. They ruthlessly beat me and my friend. I know some of them; one of them is our neighbor – Koba Sutiashvili, who works at the Khashuri police station. His father, Guram Sutiashvili, was standing at our door when my father died and did not allow journalists to approach us,” Givi Kimeridze said.

As for police officer Koba Sutiashvili and his father, who are accused with the aforementioned violence, they choose not to comment.

The family members of the dead request the investigation of the incident and have plans to exhume and examine the body.

Soso Kimeridze died in the police office on February 26, 2012. The official version of his death is cited as falling down the building staircase.
